Dunwoody Records Open to Search
The public record system follows custody, not city branding. Dunwoody City Hall holds records made by municipal departments. DeKalb offices in Decatur keep countywide land, tax, probate, marriage, election, and most court files. State agencies add vital records, regulated licenses, corporation filings, and correctional indexes. The table leads with the best online entry point, but an index is not always the full file.
| Record set | Custodian | Online index or coverage | Access route |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deeds, liens, plats | DeKalb Superior Court Clerk | GSCCCA, generally 1993 forward statewide | Index, paid images where available, or clerk books |
| Property and tax | Assessors and Tax Commissioner | Current profile and displayed tax history | Free owner, address, or parcel search |
| City administrative files | Dunwoody Clerk and departments | Agendas and selected web pages | JustFOIA, counter inspection, or written request |
| Court cases | Municipal or DeKalb court clerk | re:SearchGA coverage varies | Portal, public terminal, or clerk copy request |
| Birth, death, marriage, divorce | DPH, Probate, or Superior Court | Historical indexes only for some series | Eligibility-based application or clerk request |
| Jail, corrections, registry | Sheriff, GDC, or GBI | Current official lookup tools | Free portal or agency request |
Open does not mean that every field appears online. Adoption files, many juvenile matters, sealed cases, recent birth and death certificates, protected voter addresses, driver data, and sensitive police information have legal limits. Agencies should redact exempt portions when the rest can be released.
Dunwoody's Two-Layer Records Map
Dunwoody incorporated on December 1, 2008. That date is a practical routing line. City Hall at 4800 Ashford Dunwoody Road keeps council and board minutes, city contracts, campaign and ethics filings, planning cases, permits, occupational-tax material, police reports, and Municipal Court records created through city operations. A file about a 2015 Dunwoody permit belongs with the city.
Older local-government files may predate the city. A 2005 building issue could remain with a predecessor DeKalb department. Land title, probate, major civil and criminal matters, divorce, marriage licensing, tax, and election records stay county functions regardless of the event date. Dunwoody Municipal Court handles city ordinances and traffic citations, not felonies, divorce, probate, or deeds.
Postal names can mislead. Sandy Springs is across the Fulton County line, while Doraville, Chamblee, and Brookhaven are separate DeKalb cities. Confirm the parcel and legal city in GIS before sending a permit or police request. County deed and court routing can remain the same even when the municipal custodian changes.
Note: A Dunwoody mailing label does not by itself prove that an address falls within the incorporated city boundary.
Dunwoody Deed Index Access
The GSCCCA Real Estate index is the official name-search entry point for DeKalb deeds, security deeds, liens, assignments, cancellations, and plats. Select DeKalb County, then search each relevant role. A grantor generally transfers or encumbers an interest; a grantee receives one. The statewide index generally reaches 1993, but exact DeKalb image coverage and older books must be confirmed with the Clerk of Superior Court.
| Search field | Use | Practical detail |
|---|---|---|
| County | Required dropdown | Select DeKalb for Dunwoody land |
| Name and party type | Grantor, grantee, or both | Try surname-first, initials, trusts, and variants |
| Instrument type | Narrow the filing class | Choose deed, lien, plat, assignment, or another type |
| Book/page or instrument number | Exact retrieval | Best when copied from another record |
| Filing date range | Limit common names | Use a known ownership or transaction period |
An index row commonly shows parties, instrument type, recording date, book, page, and file number. The legal description, signatures, consideration, and prior references usually live on the image. When an online image is absent, take the citation to the clerk counter. An index result identifies a filing; it does not certify title.
Dunwoody Property Records Boundaries
The DeKalb property-tax search accepts parcel, address, and owner queries. A profile may show the taxpayer or owner, co-owner, mailing address, parcel ID, class, land use, tax district, zoning, acreage, exemptions, bills, and payment history. The owner mailing address can differ from the property's physical, or situs, address. It may be a post-office box, agent address, or old tax destination.
The county property mapping service supplies mapped parcel context and ownership layers, but GIS does not issue deeds, plats, surveys, or certified ownership proof. That division matters. Copy a known book and page from the parcel or map record, then take it to the Superior Court Clerk for the recorded document.
Mailing-address myth. A tax mailing address is a delivery field, not proof that the owner lives there now. Confirm identity with the deed and another dated record.
Dunwoody Court Records Access
The re:SearchGA court portal supports person, business, or case-number searches for participating Georgia trial courts. Limit location to DeKalb and add case type or filing dates when needed. Results can include the case number, court, case style, status, filed date, parties and roles, attorneys, judge, docket events, and disposition. A docket is the dated list of case events; it is not the same as every filed document.
Coverage and document images vary by court and migration. For the actual file, record the case number, court, and division, then ask the clerk for a docket sheet or named filing. Specify whether a plain or certified copy is needed. A certified copy carries the clerk's official authentication. Public courthouse terminals may expose details or images that the remote portal does not show.
No verified public party-name portal was found for Dunwoody Municipal Court. Start with its clerk and provide the defendant name, citation or case number, and approximate date. Federal cases for the area use the Northern District of Georgia and PACER, which charges by page under its published rules.
Note: A charge, arrest, or docket entry is not proof of conviction; read the disposition and confirm the intended person's identity.
Dunwoody Vital Record Routes
Birth, death, marriage, and divorce records follow four routes. Georgia DPH or the local vital-record office handles qualified birth and death certificate requests. Under O.C.G.A. §§ 31-10-25 and 31-10-26, recent certificates are not an unrestricted name database. Georgia Archives releases state death certificates after 75 years. DPH lists a $25 base fee for birth or death and $5 for an additional same-order copy.
Marriage routing depends on date. DPH holds 1952 through 1996 marriage records, with a $10 base certificate fee and $5 additional-copy charge. DeKalb Probate Court handles licenses and copies outside that span. Divorce decrees stay with DeKalb Superior Court; DPH can provide event verification. Mail, walk-in, and approved online channels exist, and applications require identity, relationship or authority, event facts, identification, signature, and prepaid fees. A failed search can produce a not-on-file letter rather than a refund.
- Index
- A finding list that points to a record but may omit the document itself.
- Certified copy
- An official copy authenticated by the custodian for uses that require proof.
- Custodian
- The agency or clerk responsible for keeping and releasing a record.
- Exemption
- A legal reason to withhold or redact information that would otherwise answer a request.
Dunwoody Records Offices and Portals
Choose the office that created or controls the file. City Hall is the counter for city departments, police records, and Municipal Court. County clerk divisions handle real estate and major court records, while appraisal and tax offices operate their own databases. Calling with a record type, date, address, and file number can prevent a trip to the wrong counter.

Dunwoody Safety Records Lookups
Custody and registry tools answer narrow questions. The DeKalb Sheriff's inmate lookup covers county bookings; Georgia Department of Corrections searches state custody by identifiers or name; and the GBI registry supports name and geographic searches. A jail entry reflects custody and charges, not a court finding. Match booking number, date, court, and later disposition before drawing a conclusion.
The official Georgia Bureau of Investigation registry page provides the search entry point and its statutory-use warnings.
The captured screen reinforces that registry data belongs in a safety-specific official system. Contact the registering sheriff about a suspected error, and never use registry information to threaten or harass a person.
Dunwoody Business Records Search
Georgia corporation filings can identify an entity, status, formation date, principal office, registered agent, and filing history. A registered agent accepts legal process and is not necessarily the owner or operator. Search name variants, open the entity detail, note the control number, then compare dated annual registrations. Dunwoody occupational-tax, permit, or planning files can confirm a local business connection.
The Georgia Corporations Division search offers business-name, control-number, registered-agent, and filing-role search modes.
The form shows why an exact control number is stronger than a common business name. “Active” describes entity compliance status, not whether a Dunwoody storefront currently operates. Professional status should be checked separately through the proper Georgia licensing board.
Note: Planning staff warn that the city does not demand wire transfers for applications, so verify any payment message through an official contact.
Georgia Records Law in Dunwoody
The Georgia Open Records Act, O.C.G.A. §§ 50-18-70 through 50-18-77, favors access to agency records. Any requester may describe the existing file sought without special wording. Within three business days, the agency must produce records that are readily available or give a status, timing, and cost response. Three days is not a promise that a large request will be fully produced.
Under § 50-18-71, charges may include actual media cost, up to 10 cents per letter- or legal-size page, and search, retrieval, and redaction labor at the rate of the lowest-paid qualified employee after the first 15 minutes. An agency may require prepayment when an estimate exceeds $500. Electronic inspection and a cost estimate can limit expense. Section 50-18-71(j) also means an office need not create a new report or custom compilation.
If material is withheld, ask for the cited exemption and the segregable, nonexempt remainder. The Georgia Attorney General's Open Government Mediation Program can assist with disputes, and superior-court relief remains available. Court files may follow clerk or judicial access rules rather than an agency request process.
Request Dunwoody Public Records
The city clerk coordinates Dunwoody requests through JustFOIA, with counter inspection also available. DeKalb routes requests to the department that holds the file. A narrow request is faster to identify and easier to estimate than a demand for every mention of a person or address.
- Identify the custodian. Separate city police, permit, or council material from county deeds, courts, tax, probate, and elections.
- Check the official index first. Save the parcel, book/page, instrument, report, citation, or case number that identifies the file.
- Describe an existing record, date span, involved name or address, department, and preferred electronic format. Attach supporting detail when the request portal permits it.
- Ask to inspect before buying copies and request advance notice of cost. State whether a plain or certified copy is needed.
- Save the confirmation. If access is denied, ask for the legal basis and release of all portions that can be separated from exempt data.
Lawful personal use. Use Dunwoody open records for legitimate personal research, civic review, genealogy, estate work, or scam prevention. Never use personal details to stalk, harass, threaten, or harm anyone.
Dunwoody Records Before the City
A young city sits over much older county books. DeKalb County was organized in 1822, while Dunwoody municipal operations began in 2008. Earlier deeds, probate files, marriages, tax digests, and court records therefore remain under county or state series. The online GSCCCA and re:SearchGA systems do not establish one complete conversion date for every DeKalb division.
When the web trail stops, ask the clerk about paper volumes, microfilm, and public terminals. Decatur Library's second-floor local-history desk holds city directories dating to 1928, early newspapers, Georgia census film, vital indexes, and Decatur Cemetery records. Georgia Archives and its Virtual Vault preserve county microfilm, including indexed DeKalb Marriage Book F for 1887 through 1893. Older residents may appear under Atlanta, Chamblee, Doraville, or rural-route labels rather than the modern city name.
The history is one of jurisdictional continuity, not a verified catastrophic loss. For events before DeKalb's creation, search predecessor Henry, Gwinnett, and Fayette County sources as well as Georgia land records. Note: Exact DeKalb deed-image and court-division conversion dates require confirmation from the responsible clerk.
